No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
